LIFE CLASS: Main Page
While teaching at many art colleges since
she returned to London in the early 1960's,
Joan Hargreaves is particularly noted for her
contribution to The Working Men's College,
the oldest college for adult education in the
U.K. Apart from her teaching, she sat on the
College's governing body, and committees
formulating educational and financial policy.
Teaching of art at the WMC was instigated
and perfomed by John Ruskin and the
Pre-Raphaelites as part of an ethos of 'liberal
education'; it was within this spirit that Joan
began her successful class, ‘Anatomy, Life
and Movement', this running for 30 years.

and those studying within higher and adult
education, as well as gifted amateurs.
During the last 10 years of her 86 year life she
also drew within the WMC Life Class where, as a
respected source on art anatomy and movement
in figure drawing, she offered advice to students
regularly. Work from these last years is shown
on this page, and in others linked above.
Works shown are now held within the archives
of the Manchester Metropolitan University.
